Paul Newman…

One of my favorite actors, Paul Newman, who died quite recently, is remembered to have said:

I’m not a professional philanthropist, and I’m not running for sainthood. I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer who puts back into the soil what he takes out.

Just like the farmer.

If only all farmers – big and small – were like that.

Responses

  1. The comment following the late Mr. Newman’s quote is quite catching, maybe somehow blurry.
Nevertheless, it deals with the issue of excessively working with the same soil and not giving it back what it offered.
As we all know from elementary school, life goes in a cycle, therefore, any entity giving away energy must receive energy is order not to become the missing link.
We are also familiar with the fact that farmers, and mostly “big farmers” tend to exhaust the soil. Some soils must be relieved for two years in exchange for one year of crops. All soils need to retrieve the organic compounds they have offered, not only through chemicals.
These facts being known since agriculture has begun, farmers are too greedy and often ignore the needs of the soil. True, thus they get more crops, but of what quality? And how long will the soil survive this excessive use?
This ecological issue is mainly due in my opinion to economic needs and to attempts of having constant control over the market.

  2. okay, but rania: he starred in the most dangerously disturbing zionist propaganda film of all time: exodus. surely he loses some points for that… farming aside…

  3. This Paul Newman’s quotation is all about knowing where we stand in life as part of a community and a global system. Indeed no man is an island.

But let me say that the example of the farmer is not such a good one, the similarity is just superficial.
Well, the farmer only puts back into the soil by pure interest in order to receive back, whereas human relations refuse, at least apparently, to obey this logic.

“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” (Sir Winston Churchill)

  4. Paul Newman is a legend for his work in movies, and he’s a stud for all his work outside of movies
