More support for Palestinian farmers

The European Coordination Via Campesina issued this press release today

Leave the fields to the farmers; end the violence in Gaza!
We have watched with horror as the aerial attacks on the Gaza strip which began on the 27th of December 2008 have escalated to a full scale ground assault, with a death toll now in excess of 1,000 people. The European Coordination Via Campesina, which incorporates more than 20 farmers and agricultural workers unions in Europe, is both appalled and angered by the indiscriminate massacre of men, women and children in Gaza.

The Palestinian Farmers Union (PFU), which works in the empowerment of local farmers and in the redevelopment of farming in Gaza with a view towards achieving positive social change, has suffered greatly since the start of the invasion. Farmers in Gaza have difficulty accessing land and water resources due to the conflict. The situation in Gaza is worsening daily, as the infrastructure crumbles and more people are killed. The UN distributes food to more than 70% of the population, more than 20,000 people each day. Entire fields have been bombed in the Israeli attacks. The conflict makes it impossible for Gaza to produce its own food. Many citrus and olive groves have also been destroyed.

We call for an immediate withdrawal of Israeli soldiers and a cessation of the aerial attacks which have taken so many human lives.

We see the continued attacks on Palestinian civilians as a crime against humanity and call on the governments of the European Union to denounce the invasion.

We support the civil society groups and social movements throughout Europe and the world who are uniting to call for an end to the violence and to compel the governments of their countries to put more pressure on Israel to end the hostilities.”

  1. this hows us that nothing is safe with israel even the simplest most essential needs are not respected and dealt with seriously!

  2. what i still don’t undrstand is why hasn’t anyone stopped this massacre yet?what is the european union waiting for?israel is not just killing innocent people, but it’s destroying the land and any hope the palestinians have of getting back on their feet.

  3. This isn’t a war for it to end when an army wins. the goal of this war is to eliminate the palestinian people and cause. to do so the Israeli are killing children and women and man, they are also eliminating the main sources for surviving like food and agriculture and electricity and medicine and schools (by bombing them). This is an elimination war!!

  4. You want to kill a poulation, let it be hungry! Then it’ll die alone without the need of bombs and weapons.
Really it’s so sad!!!! What makes me more sad, is that the international comity didn’t take any serious steps to end this massacre….akh!

  5. Well, for someone who can kill a thousand of people including children,i beleive he will be totally indifferent for the loss of land productivity…If a living soul didnt matter for Israel, i beleive that the material stuff like the land and water needed for food production by farmers will not even matter one percent.
It is a shame that a country like Israel, who considers itself as a scientific and developped country uses violence for political and economical purposes…It is a shame to kill people directly by bombs and indirectly by destroying their lands…It is a shame that such massacre still exists in a world that has supposedly learned from its history…

  6. When Good and Wrong are no more universal standards and when the strongest can decide what’s right and what’s not, we really start asking ourselves where are the references…
I started wondering what does Justice mean, isn’t it relative like everything in this world? And if it is, can we still call it Justice??

  7. this is really savage, as if palestinian lives are worthless. where are the human rights watch and organizations?? it seems that we are living in a jungle where’s the “survival of the fittest”!!!
