It’s late. I’ve set my books aside, and turned the TV on to see what is playing. Flipping through the channels, I find an informercial for a ‘body shaper’ for women, a shopping channel (again, more women) talking about make up that can substitute for cosmetic surgery, and then a channel advertising for the US Army hosted by two US service’people’ – a woman and a man. They were talking about how welcoming the US army is for native speakers of Arabic, how, rather than hire civil contractors, the US army would rather have native speakers of Arabic join the Army and be trained as soldiers (thus learning about the American culture and the Army culture) – and throughout this dialogue, the footage was of US soldiers talking to men in… Afghanistan.

It seems whatever they’re selling, there’s little need for accuracy, and, most definitely if they’re selling the US Army
