uh…

This morning, I had this surreal conversation with someone who shall be named as “X”.

X: “So did you go to that protest on Sunday?” [referring to the march against the sectarian regime in Lebanon]

Me: “Yes, of course. I was there! It was beautiful. Energetic. Estimates range from 8,000 to 20,000 people. Last week, we were approximately 3,000 – so we’re growing.-”

X: “Were there different sects there?”

Me: “Uh… I don’t know what the sects were of those protesting with me.”

X: “Hmm…”

Me: “I did see a Sheikh.”

X: “Sunni or Shi’ite?”

Me: “uh… I don’t know.  Gregoire Haddad was there as well.”

X: “Is he catholic? Greek orthodox?”

Me: “sigh”

Perhaps in our next march for a secular regime, we should walk according to our sectarian affiliations.

  1. Exactly !!
How would anyone expect anything from this protest .. Intolerance and Fanaticism are embodied in 90 % of the Lebanese, 5% think they are secular, but have it in their Unconsciousness, in their nature .. like Mr. X .. And the rest that are truly secular, well mainly they are out of Lebanon, the one in lebanon wouldn’t even participate in the march because they are well aware that, maybe , after 20 generations, we’ll have 8000 to 20 000 real secular Lebanese. Secular, Tolerant ( that accept any difference EVEN if it’s their own daughter or son ) , Broad-minded, catholic and NOT orthodox , with no prejudiced ..
    Until then …

  2. I think Mr. X’s trying to show that a certain sect is fueling the protest because the abolition of the sectarian system would be in its own benefit. Sadly Mr. X has failed to understand that those who went there were people who just believe that such a system is only consolidating the “fears” of some minorities, hence we see them clutching on such a repulsive system. You reap what you sow. When will we eradicate this cancer out of our society is in our hands.

  3. Hmm… why are assumptions made that the person is a male. “Mr. X”? why not “Ms. X”?

    just a side note🙂

  4. I believe that X was a female.
Anyway, like in genetics, you could adpot the following: X is referred to males and Y to females.🙂 . What do you think?

  5. Sorry, I meant like in genetics, the chromosome X for females, and Y for males. Isn’t that a good idea? What do you hink?
