care about hunger? eat less meat

George Monbiot has raised some good points in his article. Want to read it? -> Read it!

“Of the 2.13bn tonnes [of grain] likely to be consumed this year, only 1.01bn, according to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, will feed people.”

The rest?

“The World Bank points out that “the grain required to fill the tank of a sports utility vehicle with ethanol … could feed one person for a year”.

“While 100m tonnes of food will be diverted this year to feed cars, 760m tonnes will be snatched from the mouths of humans to feed animals – which could cover the global food deficit 14 times. If you care about hunger, eat less meat.”

“Beef cattle eat about 8kg of grain or meal for every kilogram of flesh they produce; a kilogram of chicken needs just 2kg of feed.”

“The UN expects the population to rise to 9 billion by 2050. These extra people will require another 325m tonnes of grain. Let us assume, perhaps generously, that politicians such as Ruth Kelly are able to “adjust policy in the light of new evidence” and stop turning food into fuel. Let us pretend that improvements in plant breeding can keep pace with the deficits caused by climate change. We would need to find an extra 225m tonnes of grain. This leaves 531m tonnes for livestock production, which suggests a sustainable consumption level for meat and milk some 30% below the current world rate.

***”The only reasonable answer to the question of how much meat we should eat is as little as possible. Let’s reserve it – as most societies have done until recently – for special occasions.”

Responses

  1. Recent studies have shown that humans are consuming meet more then they should be in their diets. In fact not only that this is overconsumtion is unhealthy and causes cancer, but also it is contributing to an increase in worldwild hunger since animals requirements of food for growth is much bigger than human consumption of meet. The best solution would be in consuming less meet for better health and better life

  2. Huge and freaking numbers.
But the solutions written by the author are not applicable.I think the best solution is to stop first producing BIOFUELs and people should reduce eating meat in their diets. Not all people can turn to be vegans, its not easy.
Also, all countries should work on this,no one country can solve this huge problem especially that our population is increasing tremendously.

  3. being a vegan that is depending only on vegetable and cutting of meet and chicken, could cause many deficiencies, such as zinc, iron, an many others. these are important in maintaining one’s life. You could take supplements but i think it’s not as good as eating the real thing. i agree that there is other solutions to this problem than cutting meat to reduce hunger.

  4. it’s a shame that our own food is being turned to fuel for the cars that we made! we made cars to make our life easier , now cars are taking our food. of course there is political decisions behind this!
everyone of us would damage the whole world for his own profit. this reflects the selfishness of humans. i believe that it is coded by genes!
